Eveline Ester (°1984, Hasselt) lives and works in Roeselare. As a graphic designer with a background in architecture, she has been fascinated by the urban landscape with its geometric shapes and varying color palette since childhood.
Everywhere she goes she takes photos of the city. Eveline banishes people from the street scene, creating a desolate atmosphere that feels recognizable and yet creates alienation. The well-considered color choices always play a determining role in the atmosphere of the painting.
Her paintings are never literal translations of her photographs. She adds subjective elements: shadows, reflections, colors and above all leaves out many details. Her works require construction, not registration, because her images do not exist in this world. Each painting is a wish, an expression of how she wants to see the world.
Through her paintings, the viewer discovers the beauty that she sees in the cityscapes where many see only mundaneness and ugliness.
